Itchy, red welts on the skin often triggered by an allergic reaction.
What is it?
Hives, also known as urticaria, is a common skin disorder marked by itchy, red welts of varying sizes that can emerge anywhere on the body. This condition is generally an allergic reaction, sparked by exposure to allergens like foods, drugs, insect stings or dander. Hives can also be triggered by high levels or stress.
The hives rash typically diminishes within 24 hours, but new ones may develop, giving the impression that the condition is persistent or migrating around the body. Chronic urticaria is when this disorder lasts for more than six weeks, which is less frequent, but may indicate a more severe underlying health issue.
How is it treated?
Treatment of hives includes managing the immediate symptoms and developing a plan to avoid future outbreaks. For swelling and itching, we may recommend antihistamines, corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory medications. Our board-certified provider will work with you to determine the trigger of your hives so that you can reduce the risk of recurrence in the future. If your hives are a symptom of a more critical illness, we will assist in detecting and addressing that as well.
