Flesh-colored bumps caused by sexual transmission of the human papillomavirus.
What is it?
Genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease (STD) triggered by specific variants of the human papillomavirus (HPV). These warts usually show up as small, fleshy growths or clusters in the genital area although they might not be noticeable right away. The virus can spread even if warts are not visible.
Genital warts are common and impact all genders. They are generally harmless and don't result in cancer. However, they can cause discomfort and, in some scenarios, can cause complications during childbearing. Prompt treatment can help eliminate the genital warts, relieve any discomfort and reduce transmission to others.
How is it treated?
Effective treatments for genital warts include topical medications, cryotherapy (freezing) or minor surgical interventions. While there is no definitive cure for the HPV virus, these treatments can control external symptoms and inhibit further spread.
Beyond providing treatment, our board-certified dermatology providers can recommend prevention strategies, such as HPV vaccination, and offer guidance on how to minimize the risk of transmitting the condition to partners.
