Skin ailments caused by the presence of bacteria, yeast, fungi, viruses or parasites.
What is it?
Skin infections can range from mild to severe. Most skin infections are highly treatable, although people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of skin infections and the outcomes can be more severe.
There are several types of skin infections, such as bacterial (impetigo, boils), viral (shingles, warts), fungal (athlete's foot, ringworm) and parasitic (lice, bedbugs). Symptoms vary depending on the location, severity and type of infection. Common symptoms include rashes, swelling, itching, pus and pain.
Although many skin infections resolve on their own, untreated infections can sometimes worsen or spread. How is it treated?
Treatment of a skin infection is dependent on the specific source of infection. Based on the infection type, we may prescribe antibiotics, antiviral, antifungal or antiparasitic medications. Treatments tend to be topical or oral and can be administered at home.
