Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.
What is it?
Psoriasis is an immune-related skin condition which triggers skin cells to reproduce at a more rapid pace than normal, leading to skin inflammation. It is not infectious and cannot be transmitted from one person to another. Most people with psoriasis experience red, inflamed skin patches with thick, white or silver scales. These patches are typically itchy and may cause a burning sensation and tenderness. It's not uncommon for the skin adjacent to the patches to feel dry, which can result in cracked or bleeding skin. Some psoriasis patients also experience stiff or inflamed joints.
Psoriasis is a chronic condition that goes through cycles of flare-ups that can last days or weeks. How is it treated?
Even though there isn't a cure for psoriasis, we can help manage your symptoms. Some patients respond well to topical remedies like corticosteroids and oral retinoids to keep the symptoms in check. We may also suggest treatments such as salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids or even simple solutions like aloe vera. In certain instances, we find photo/light therapy is effective. For more acute cases, we are able to prescribe oral or injectable medicines that assist in restraining your immune system.
