An infectious skin condition common among young children. Often includes blisters that evolve into a yellowish crust.
What is it?
Impetigo is a highly infectious skin condition that is commonly seen among young children, but can impact people of all ages. The disorder is marked by red sores or blisters that can appear on any area of the body, typically beginning on the arms, legs and face. Impetigo blisters frequently burst, seep for a few days, then form a honey-colored crust. Although this condition can be itchy and cause discomfort, it rarely leads to serious health complications.
How is it treated?
In many cases, we will prescribe a topical antibiotic ointment, which should be applied to the affected area as instructed. Oral antibiotics may be recommended for more serious instances of impetigo. Prompt treatment can control symptoms and reduce spread to others.
