Spider veins are damaged, visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins tend to show up in groupings that mirror webs or tree branches. They can develop anywhere, but are typically found on the legs, feet or face. These veins do not pose a health risk, but they can lead to swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Spider veins are more prevalent in women than men and often run in families. They are also common in individuals who spend long periods sitting or standing, pregnant individuals and those who are overweight due to insufficient circulation.
Spider veins occur when the valves within your veins become weak. Factors such as sunlight, hormonal shifts, prior vein surgery, excessive exposure to UV rays or an injury can also trigger their formation.
Occasionally, spider veins may be a warning sign of a more severe issue known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). Our board-certified dermatologists at Dermatologists of Southwest Ohio can assess if you are at risk of CVI. We also offer aesthetic treatments to assist patients who are displeased with the appearance of spider veins, serving the communities of in Batavia, Beavercreek, Bridgetown, Cincinnati, Dayton, Dent, Greenville, Hillsboro, Kettering, Mason, Montgomery, Oxford, Troy, West Chester and Wilmington, Ohio.
